Card boards

Free-form boards for brainstorming and prioritizing ideas with movable cards.

A card board is a canvas where you dump ideas as cards and drag them to rank by priority. Unlike Kanban boards with fixed columns, cards go anywhere on the board — position is the priority. It's deliberately low-friction for quick brainstorming and planning.

Why card boards are useful

Card boards give you a space to capture and organize thoughts fast. You can:

  • Dump ideas quickly — double-click the canvas to add a card and type an idea.
  • Rank by priority — drag cards around; higher and more left means higher priority.
  • Collaborate in real time — multiple people can move cards at once and see each other's changes instantly.
  • Have the assistant help — ask Claude to brainstorm ideas as cards, or check what's on the board and suggest changes.
  • Keep ideas organized — save card boards to collections alongside artifacts and to-dos so the team can find them.
  • Persist your thinking — changes save automatically as you work.

Where to find card boards

On the sidebar, find Cards under Assets (next to Whiteboards). You'll see a list of all your boards.

Creating a board

Click New board to create one. You can name it and start adding ideas right away. The canvas is blank at first — you decide what goes on it.

Adding cards

On a board, you have two ways to add cards:

  • Double-click empty space — the canvas opens a new card at that spot, ready for you to type.
  • Click the "+ Card" button — adds a card near the center of the visible area.

Each card has:

  • A title bar — drag it to move the card anywhere on the canvas.
  • Text area — type or edit your idea. Text scales with the card size so readability stays consistent.
  • Color swatch — click it to pick a color (yellow, pink, green, blue, purple, gray) so ideas at a glance are recognizable.
  • Size menu — click to pick a preset (small, medium, large, huge). A bigger card reads as a bigger idea.
  • Resize grip (bottom-right corner) — drag to resize the card freely. Position is re-clamped so cards stay on the canvas.
  • Delete button (×) — removes the card (no undo — be careful).

Prioritizing cards

Cards have no fixed columns or lanes. Instead, position is priority and size is visual weight:

  • Cards higher on the board rank higher.
  • Cards to the left rank higher than those to the right (reading order).
  • Drag the title bar to move a card anywhere.
  • Resize a card to emphasize it — a big card reads as a big idea at a glance.

When you chat with a board or the assistant reads it, cards are listed top-to-bottom by priority, and resized cards are tagged so the emphasis survives (e.g., "- [huge] Big strategic initiative").

Real-time collaboration

When a board is open:

  • You see other team members' movements as they drag cards in real time.
  • Changes are synced instantly — when someone adds, moves, or deletes a card, you see it right away.
  • Your work is saved automatically as you move cards, so there's no "save" button to click.
  • If someone updates the board from another device or via the assistant, the changes appear on your canvas.

Sharing and visibility

Each board has a visibility setting:

  • Private — only you (and admins) can see and edit it.
  • Workspace — everyone on your team can see it and move cards together.

Toggle visibility in the board header. Team members can only edit a board if you've shared it as workspace-visible.

Collections and context

You can file card boards into collections — the same named groups you use for artifacts, files, and to-dos. From the Card boards list page, select boards and click Add to collection to file them.

When you use a collection in Chat (via the 📚 picker), the assistant can see the boards in that collection and help you edit them. The assistant can also create a board and file it into a collection as part of a larger task.

Chat with a board

When you have a board open, click the Chat button in the header to open a persistent chat panel beside the canvas. This panel:

  • Stays with the board — unlike the quick chat bubble on Collections, this is a real conversation tied to the board. Your history is saved and syncs across devices.
  • Shows in your chat list — the conversation appears in the main Chat sidebar so you can return to it anytime.
  • Lets you direct the assistant — tell it to "add ideas for …", "brainstorm 5 angles", or "what's the top priority?".
  • Reads the current board state — the assistant sees all your cards and their positions so it understands the ranking and can suggest changes.
  • Adds cards live — when you ask the assistant to add ideas, they appear on the canvas in real time as it's typing.
  • Respects access — you can only chat with boards you own or that are shared with your team.

Automation and the API

The assistant and MCP can also manage boards: they can create them, list them, read the current state, and add cards — all without you touching the UI. When adding cards, you can specify a named size (small, medium, large, huge) so the assistant's ideas come in pre-weighted. This means an agent can run a weekly brainstorm and dump results as cards with appropriate emphasis, and your team always has the latest ideas ranked and visually weighted.
